Hand Tool & Cutlery Manufacturing in the US - Industry Risk Rating Report

Industry Risk Ratings Synopsis

This Industry Risk Ratings report from IBISWorld evaluates the inherent risks associated with the Hand Tool & Cutlery Manufacturing in the US industry. Industry Risk is assumed to be 'the difficulty, or otherwise, of the business operating environment'.

The report looks at the operational risk associated with this industry. Three types of risk are recognized in our analysis. These are: risk arising from within the industry itself (structural risk), risks arising from the expected future performance of the industry (growth risk) and risk arising from forces external to the industry (external sensitivity risk).

This approach is new in that it analyses non-financial information surrounding each industry. Industries are scored on a 9-point scale, where 1 represents the lowest risk and 9 the highest. The Industry Risk score measures expected Industry Risk over the coming 12-18 months.

Industry Definition

Establishments in this industry (1) manufacture nonprecious and precious plated metal cutlery and flatware; (2) manufacture nonpowered hand and edge tools, (3) manufacture nonpowered handsaws; (4) manufacture saw blades; and (5) manufacture metal kitchen utensils and pots and pans.Cutlery and flatware products include barber's scissors, razor and knife blades, butcher knives, carving sets, fingernail and toenail clippers, table forks, hair clippers, plated metal cutlery, pocket knives, safety razor blades, nonelectric scissors, nonelectric shears, table spoons, swords and tailors scissors.Hand and edge tools include agricultural handtools, augurs, awls, axes, bearing puller, blow torches, carpenters tools, chisels, glass cutters, cutting dies, drill bits, woodworking edge tools, handheld files, fish wire, hammers, hatchets, lawn edges, measuring tools, and mechanics handtools.Saw blade and handsaw products include nonpowered handsaws and saw blades such as saw blades, chain saw blades, metal cutting saw blades, hand saws, stone cutting saws, and amongst others wood cutting saw blades.

Report Contents

Risk Overview

The Risk Overview chapter includes sections on Industry Definition and Activities, Industry Risk Score and Risk Rating Analysis. The Industry Definition and Activities section provides a detailed definition of the activities carried out by operators in this industry as defined in NAICS. A list of the primary activities of the industry is also included. The Industry Risk Score section provides the Overall Industry Risk Score as well as the Risk Scores for each of the three types of risk covered that combine to form the Overall Industry Risk Score. These three types of risk are Structural Risk, Growth Risk and External Sensitivity Risk. The Risk Rating Analysis section discusses the underlying factors contributing to the Overall Industry Risk Score.

Structural Risk

The Structural Risk chapter looks at risk arising from within the industry itself and provides a detailed discussion of the industry’s level of exposure to seven key indicators. These key indicators are Barriers to Entry, Competition, Industry Exports, Industry Imports, Level of Assistance, Life Cycle Stage and Volatility of Industry. The Overall Structural Risk Score is a weighted aggregation of these seven key indicators. Each of the key indicators is discussed in detail in this section.

Growth Risk

The Growth Risk chapter looks at risks arising from the expected future performance of the industry. The Overall Growth Risk Score is determined by amalgamating the scores for Recent Industry Growth and Forecast Industry Growth. Detailed analysis is provided discussing the reasons for the growth scores of both.

Sensitivity Risk

The Sensitivity Risk chapter looks at risks arising from forces (sensitivities) external to the industry. The Overall External Sensitivity Risk Score is determined by identifying the most significant (up to 6) external factors and weighting them to represent how significant each sensitivity is to the performance of the industry. Examples of External Sensitivities are Exchange Rates, Interest Rates, Commodity Prices and Government Regulations. There is also a detailed analysis of the affect each of the sensitivities has on the industry, including charts and data tables where appropriate.

Industry Risk and Industry Risk Scoring Methodology

This chapter provides an overview of how IBISWorld defines Industry Risk and discusses the methodology used to arrive at an Industry Risk Score. There is also a table that provides a definition of the seven levels of Industry Risk

The 2009 World Forecasts of Interchangeable Tools for Hand Tools or for Machine-Tools Including Dies for Extruding Metal Export Supplies

This report was created for strategic planners, international marketing executives and export managers whose primary concern is the world market for interchangeable tools for hand tools or for machine-tools including dies for extruding metal. With the globalization of this market, managers can no longer be contented with a local view. Nor can managers be contented with out-of-date statistics that appear several years after the fact.

I have developed a methodology, based on macroeconomic and trade models, to estimate the market for interchangeable tools for hand tools or for machine-tools including dies for extruding metal for those firms serving the world via exports and foreign direct investment. It does so for the current year based on a variety of key historical indicators and econometric models.

The World Market for Hand Tools, Pneumatic Tools, Tools with Self-Contained Non-Electric Motors, and Their Parts: A 2009 Global Trade Perspective

This report was created for strategic planners, international executives and import/export managers who are concerned with the market for hand tools, pneumatic tools, tools with self-contained non-electric motors, and their parts. With the globalization of this market, managers can no longer be contented with a local view. Nor can managers be contented with out-of-date statistics that appear several years after the fact. I have developed a methodology, based on macroeconomic and trade models, to estimate the market for hand tools, pneumatic tools, tools with self-contained non-electric motors, and their parts for those countries serving the world market via exports or supplying from various countries via imports. I do so for the current year based on a variety of key historical indicators and econometric models.

On the demand side, exporters and strategic planners approaching the world market face a number of questions. Which countries are supplying hand tools, pneumatic tools, tools with self-contained non-electric motors, and their parts? What is the dollar value of these imports? How much do the imports of hand tools, pneumatic tools, tools with self-contained non-electric motors, and their parts vary from one country to another? Do exporters serving the world market have similar market shares across the importing countries? Which countries supply the most exports of hand tools, pneumatic tools, tools with self-contained non-electric motors, and their parts? Which countries are buying their exports? What is the value of these exports and which countries are the largest buyers?

Gardens Green Your Minds

Consumer attitudes towards gardening have changed significantly in recent years as the garden is increasingly becoming an extension of the living room. Living rooms and space are not only independently defined in terms of their four walls. Younger homeowners see the garden as an area of relaxation, and, spurred by gardening programs, are looking for products that enable them to acquire an "instant effect' for minimal effort. In this case, power tools, bedding plants, multipurpose lawncare products, and decking, have added in popularity.Generally speaking, gardens represent the unique taste of houseowners. Here, decorative elements contribute to transform a home environment into what it should be: a "paradise of well-being¡¨exquisitely devised by human hands. The second, the concept of "all-in-one" continues to dominate the market. In response to the "summer of the century", gardeners are aware of the importance of garden watering, in help of the use of corresponding rain water-collecting systems at the right time not only to make sure an optimal water supply for plants, but also function a smart money-saver solution. By this, more user-friendly systems with a high utility value are launched to meet the demand. The gardening designs focus on being purist-straight-lined, a delicate, dainty Bistro look, rustic colonial style or classic elegant. Consumers customer makes the decision to purchase based on the criteria of: seeing, sitting, feeling. And yet: an eccentric, exceptional design is an eye-catching feature, and already next year it might purely and simply be the best-seller. In this connection, trend-setting models enjoy equal status alongside traditional forms and styles and classic elegant design.Garden sheds aren't just for tools anymore. Now some custom-designed sheds are practically cozy enough to live in as more homeowners are looking for ways not only to beautify their landscaping, but increase property value, they are building garden sheds and other outbuildings to reflect their home designs.

French Gardening Tool Hot-Sold

The sales report shows sustained growth in lawnmower sector: riding-type lawnmowers up 4%; walk-behind lawnmowers rising 10% and gas walk-behind lawnmowers even jumping 12%. The lawnmower market is expected to grow in the coming years even in gloomy economic climate. Price has reduced to a less important factor than warranties and services. Recent trends also indicate a preference for comfort. Manufacturers and distributors are now emphasizing better seats with springs and armrests, and improved positioning of tools. There is more stringent regulation for defective products. Government requires the manufacturers for more product liability insurance covering consumer injuries. It is also worthy of notice that a new EC regulation intends to reduce the noise emitted by lawnmowers. It sets noise emission limits and establishes a method for measuring such emissions for all types of lawnmowers. EC regulations also require that testing be done in an EC-accredited laboratory.

Hand tools

Any of the implements used by craftsmen in manual operations, such as chopping, chiseling, sawing, filing, or forging. Complementary tools, often needed as auxiliaries to shaping tools, include such implements as the hammer for nailing and the vise for holding. A craftsman may also use instruments that facilitate accurate measurements: the rule, divider, square, and others. Power tools—usually hand-held, motor-powered implements such as the electric drill or electric saw—perform many of the old manual operations and as such may be considered hand tools.

Milwaukee’s V28 Technology Brings Revolution to Cordless Power Tools

During the 40 plus years since the cordless power tool category was first established, the battery technology that powers these products has seen numerous advancements. However, none of them have taken cordless power to a level matching that of corded products as was originally the intention. That is, until now. The introduction of Milwaukee Electric Tool V28™ lithium ion technology represents a quantum leap in cordless performance and a revolution within the category altogether.

There’s no denying the fact that cordless power tools are popular. In fact, over the past 15 years the cordless market has grown at twice the rate of the overall power tool market. Despite this, shortcomings in performance and run time have caused cordless power tools outside of drills to remain, for the most part, occasional use products.

Nickel-Cadmium (NiCd) batteries are the original and still most popular choice in the category. The 18 volt NiCd has reached what most consider its practical limit in terms of power output at a comfortable weight. (Twenty-four volt models haven’t been widely accepted due to their weight and relatively small performance gain over 18 volts.) Until the introduction of V28, Nickel Metal Hydride (NiMH) had been considered the new frontier in power tool battery technology mainly because it offered slightly more power in a pack that contained no cadmium. However, NiMH has not caught on due to its higher cost and cold weather intolerance.

With 28 volts of power, the new V28 technology adds no extra battery weight, yet delivers increased power and up to twice the run time of traditional 18 volt products. In addition, V28 technology continues to deliver its high performance in a wider temperature range than NiCd, operating in hot or cold environments. Beyond its performance benefits, the V28 battery is more eco-friendly than most other high powered rechargeable batteries because it contains no cadmium other heavy metals. However, Milwaukee still encourages the recycling of all rechargeable battery packs.

“Professional trades people have been waiting for a product like V28 for a very long time. This line has been built to make our end-users more productive and efficient than they thought possible with a cordless product,” notes Christopher Berg, Milwaukee Brand Manager. “Because of the countless benefits and productivity enhancements that V28 offers, we expect this line to significantly grow our market share in the cordless category as soon as it’s out of the gate.”

Because V28 marks the first time that lithium ion technology has been perfected for “high current draw” applications, power tools that were once unavailable in cordless versions can now go unplugged. One such example is the V28 reciprocating saw which is powerful enough for every day professional use. However, the impact of V28 technology stretches beyond power tools. “This is truly a technological revolution,” adds Berg. “This revolutionary breakthrough has significant applications in categories such as lawn and garden, home appliances, even military uses.”

“To make lithium ion capable of powering high current draw applications, Milwaukee’s researchers turned to lithium manganese,” says Gary Meyer, R & D Manager at Milwaukee. “A Milwaukee team of research and product engineers working with our partner E-One Moli Energy of Canada optimized a cell to deliver high power and long run time while providing better than expected battery life. The partnership developed and perfected a larger sized battery cell than traditionally seen in today’s common lithium ion applications. Milwaukee added an encapsulated robust electronic circuit, resulting in what we call a ‘smart battery’ and has done an excellent job in developing the V28™ battery that delivers up to 2 ½ times the work of an 18 volt NiCd battery while weighing slightly less.”

Milwaukee is launching the V28 line at an opportune time with the demand of power and hand tools forecasted to increase by 4.7% in 2005, and by a further 8 % by 2007. However, the company does not expect NiCd technology to disappear anytime soon. In fact, because of NiCd’s affordability and popularity, Milwaukee will continue to invest in research and development of its NiCd product offering while simultaneously growing the V28 line.

Available in the second half of 2005, the V28 line is expected to generate significant growth and profitability opportunities for participating Milwaukee Electric Tool distributors nationwide. And because the V28 technology has numerous patents pending, the lithium ion power tool revolution is one distributors can leverage for some time

Initially the V28 line will include a band saw, percussion drill, circular saw, Sawzall® reciprocating saw, impact wrench, rotary hammer, work light and battery charger. More tools are on the drawing board for early 2006 introduction. Products will be available individually or in a combo kit in the second half of 2005.

To take the new V28 tools for a test drive, hear product reviews from real trades people, register for a chance to win V28 tools or sign-up to be notified when V28 products are available in your area.

The V28 line will be available at participating Milwaukee Electric Tool distributors across Europe in July 2005. Milwaukee Electric Tool is a leading producer and seller of heavy-duty portable electric tools and accessories.

Deltagon Drill Bits Make Round Holes Round

The new Makita Deltagon SDS+ drill bits have three cutting edges rather than the traditional two and this simple formula delivers far more accurate holes, even in the toughest materials. A traditional two-edge drill bit suffers from poor directional stability, especially where the drilling of a pilot hole is not possible or practical. The drill bit tends to wander making the finished hole oversize and often actually triangular rather than round.

The Makita Deltagon three-edge drill bits have a more stable tri-axial cutting performance, the three edges keeping the bit firmly in one position. The result is a hole exactly where positioned and a far better quality of round hole, especially important when using adhesive or tension fixings.

Makita Deltagon drill bits have solid tungsten tips, the tungsten brazed onto the carbon steel bit which is then finished by rotary grinder to total accuracy. This formula gives a very long working life, easily justifying the cost investment. Deltagon bits should be the preferred selection for any drilling into brick, block, concrete, reinforced concrete, mortar or stone. A Deltagon bit will drill through steel cladding up to 1mm thick and then into the concrete section all in one process.

The re-enforcing bars in concrete castings can cause serious accuracy problems as well as the risk of the two-edge drill bit snagging with risk to the machine and the operator. Here again the three-edge Deltagon bit proves valuable. The three cutting edges will keep the bit rotating whereas a two-edge bit will either snag beside the rebar or be forced away from the rebar elongating the hole. The three-edge bit will always deliver a round hole, safely.

The Importance of Choosing the Right Tools

For some jobs, Vice-grips and duct tape just won’t hack it!.

This revelation struck me in the forehead like the preverbal ball-peen hammer just last week when I took my SUV in to my repair shop to have its power steering pump replaced.

Mike, the mechanic at the shop, was in a foul mood when I arrived. Hmmmm, unusual, I thought, there’s usually a big smile across his face.

“So, Mikey, what’s wrong?” I asked.

“It’s that damn Valvo I’ve been working on, Mikey blurted out. I don’t have the right tool I need to repair the turbo and because of that, this job - that pays 8 hrs flat-rate (a mechanic’s fixed fee for a service) has now taken me more than twice that long to complete.”

I could immediately relate. I had heard all this many times before growing up the son of a professional mechanic.

Mom and dad’s finances were tight when I was a kid, just like they are for us all now. Consequently, some of the biggest fights I can remember my parents having were over my father purchasing his professional tools. Since mom was the one who handled the finances, she would go ballistic when my dad came home from work with news that he had just bought another specialty wrench for his toolbox.

I can hear it now, plain as day - “Robert, do you want to eat this week or buy tools?”

His answer was always the same - “Alice, those tools make my job faster, my work better and my paycheck fatter!”

That ended their discussion and mom was left with the task of working her magic with the family finances.

· In both Mikey’s and my father’s case, having the right tool for the job had a direct affect on their ability to support their families.

But, choosing the right tools can sometimes mean the difference between life and death.

Case in point – Rattle Snake Removal

Recently, Michael, my next-door neighbor, came frantically knocking at my garage door. “Bruce, can you come out here and tell me what kind of snake this is,” he excitedly asked?

I followed Michael to the neighbor’s backyard and there, from a distance; I immediately spotted a large snake making its way across the yard. It was hard for me to tell what it was but when I got closer, I froze in my tracks. There slithering in the grass in front of me was a HUGE Eastern Diamondback Rattlesnake.

I could hardly believe my eyes, so I yelled for Michael to get me a shovel. Then, with shovel in hand, I approached, this rattlesnake the snake, but I quickly realized that the length of my shovel was not nearly long enough to keep me out of the striking range of this big boy’s fangs, so, I backed off.

The rattlesnake and I assumed our defensive postures. We were in a standoff. Then the situation began to deteriorate rapidly as the crowd grew  – so my neighbor, whose back yard it was that we were all standing, called the local wildlife removal service to come get our wayward rattlesnake.

In the meantime, I abandoned use of the shovel for an extendable fiberglass painter’s pole. In my opinion, the painter’s pole was a more appropriate tool for this job. It still allowed me to control the rattlesnake, but now from a much safer distance.

Then the professional handler arrived on the scene and I was shocked to see that our wildlife person came equipped to perform this removal armed with only a plastic garbage bag and a 28-inch snake tong. “You’re kidding me - right!” was my first response to this guy now standing beside me. Mr. Wildlife removal took a quick glance at the tongs in his hand then at this pi**ed off 60 inch - 20 lb rattlesnake lying on the ground in front of us.

He knew what I meant!

“How bout I pin the head with my pole then you grab him with your tongs?” was my suggestion.

So, that’s how it went down. Our neighborhood rattlesnake received a professional chamfered ride in a black garbage bag to Herp heaven.

· In this situation, the right tool for the job turned out to be some common sense and an improvised painters pole. The pole provided distance, but common sense is what kept everyone safe.

The Tool Industry's Little Secrets: Replacement Batteries

An anonymous commenter on my Cordless Tool Battery Primer asked this question:
Why are two replacement batteries the same price as a new cordless tool WITH two batteries?

Ahh, so you noticed the secret. Yes, it is quite possible to buy a tool and two batteries for only a few dollars more than two batteries.

I've talked to several manufacturers about this situation, here are some of the things I have been told (these are not necessarily direct quotes):

"The most expensive part of most cordless tools are the batteries. We purchase the cells for production runs of tools in larger quantities and therefore they are less expensive to manufacture than the smaller runs of replacement batteries."

"Margins on tool sets are low and the replacement batteries are much higher. We need to get people to buy a tool so they will buy accessories for the tool down the road."

"Modern tool batteries often last longer than the tool with which they were purchased. So we focus on keeping the battery price down in the kit form."

"Replacement accessory batteries have more packing and handling as a percentage of their cost."

I can tell you that as a distributor/seller the basis of the higher cost comes from the manufacturer. Regarding the reasons above, I have a feeling all of the above have a little bit to do with it... as well as the need to show units shipped of new tools to executives, bankers and the press.

Power Tools price increase in 2009

Almost all power tools manufacturers are having some large price increases in 2009. This is partly due to the Pound being so weak compared with other currencies such as the Euro and US Dollar, but also because of the increase costs of raw materials.

Some manufacturers are increasing prices as much as 20% but in the main around 5 - 10%.
